Laying the Groundwork in Dreamweaver CS3 Part I
Before you remove a site, make sure you export the site settings by choosing Export from the
Manage Sites dialog box (Site ??? Manage Sites). The exported file preserves all the connection
information and can be imported through the Manage Sites dialog box at a later date.
With the local site root folder established, Dreamweaver can properly manage links regardless of whether
the document relative or site root relative format is used.
You can find a discussion of document relative and site root relative addressing in Chapter 10.
Working Directly with Servers
Web designers work under a variety of conditions. Some designers are tasked with making small modifications
to a range of individual Web pages on a variety of sites rather than focusing on the development and
maintenance of complete sites. For these types of jobs, it is often unnecessary to define a site in
Dreamweaver??”all you really need is a connection to the server. After you establish a server connection,
you can download files to your local system, make your modifications, and put the altered files back on
the server.
If you prefer, Dreamweaver now gives you the option to work without establishing a site. You can create
connections via either FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or RDS (Remote Development Services).
