RDS is a component
of the ColdFusion server used for file transfer. After the server connection is created, Dreamweaver
lists the available files in the Files panel, just like a standard site. When you open a file, that file and any
dependent files are transferred to your local system for editing. If you save the file, Dreamweaver automatically
stores the modified file on the server and erases the local copy.
Although convenient for simple modifications, working without a defined site does have its limitations. If
you use this technique, none of Dreamweaver??™s sitewide features are available, including templates, library
items, check in/check out, cloaking, and link checking, among others.
You should exercise extreme care when working directly with server files. In most situations, it
is strongly advised that you work with Dreamweaver??™s defined site structure, particularly if
other designers are working on the site. Without some sort of revision control, such as Dreamweaver??™s Check
In/Check Out feature, it is entirely possible that work can be inadvertently lost.
Establishing a siteless server connection
Whether or not you define a site, you create, edit, and remove server connections by using the Manage Sites
dialog box. The type of remote access??”FTP or RDS??”you choose for a server determines how the connection
is listed.
