Remotely, DSNs are set up by system
administrators on the testing server.
Even if you ultimately decide to use a more efficient method of connecting to the data source, DSNs are
very useful during the development phase. Every server model, except for PHP and .NET, supports DSNs.
To set up a local DSN on a Windows system, follow these steps:
1. Windows XP and 2000 users should select Data Sources (ODBC) from the Administrative Tools
folder. The ODBC Data Source Administrator opens.
If you??™re working with a Macintosh and want to use an ODBC DSN connection??”or just prefer
to work with the actual data on the server??”the DSN must be established on your testing
server by the system administrator. All database communication is then handled online.
2. From the ODBC Data Source Administrator, select the System DSN tab. The System DSN tab lists
all the DSNs previously defined for your system. If you??™ve installed Dreamweaver, you see
CafeTownsend (used in the Dreamweaver tutorial), in the list.
3. From the System DSN tab, click Add. The Create New Data Source dialog box opens.
4. Choose the appropriate driver for your data source from the list. The driver for Access databases
is listed as Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb); the one for Oracle databases is shown as Microsoft
ODBC for Oracle.
