Connecting to the Customer
Fundamentally, you have two types of customers: new customers and returning customers. The goal of
almost every enterprise is to turn the former into the latter. To that end, e-commerce sites try to make the
customer experience as pleasant as possible. What makes for an enjoyable customer visit? Volumes have
been written on that subject, so I??™ll concentrate here on one facet: the customer??™s account.
Early on in the history of Web stores, it wasn??™t uncommon to require returning customers to re-enter all
their pertinent billing and shipping information. The e-commerce sites had no way of tracking all that data.
Now, the vast majority of online stores??”particularly the successful ones??”offer a way for customers to
open an account to store their basic information.
