Streaming video is also
fully seekable??”in other words, the video playhead can be moved anywhere to instantly view video from
that point; with progressive download, you can only seek portions of the video that have already been
downloaded. The truly advanced features of Web video??”live feed, interactive control, video messaging,
and so on??”are only possible with streaming video.
A couple of hosted streaming services are available for Flash video. Adobe has partnered
with a number of content delivery providers under their Flash Video Streaming Service
umbrella aimed at enterprise customers; learn more by visiting www.adobe.com/products/
flashmediaserver/fvss. One of the content providers, VitalStream, has a separate hosting service for
small business called VitalStream Small Business Services (www.playstream.com). A free extension to
insert PlayStream streaming videos is available from WebAssist (www.webassist.com) and is included on
this book??™s DVD.
Inserting Flash video
The Flash Video object makes it as easy to add video to your Web page as it is to add any other Flash
movie??”with even greater flexibility and control. Not only is your video added to the page, but it??™s accompanied
by your choice of built-in controller. Flash detection code is automatically added to your page, and
you can even insert a custom message to site visitors if they don??™t have the required version.
