Contribute compatibility relies on key team-oriented features discussed elsewhere in this
chapter: Check In/Check Out and Design Notes.
For medium-to-large sites, Adobe recommends its Web Publishing System. The Web Publishing System
combines Studio 8 for design purposes, a number of Contribute 4 licenses for content entry, and an administrative
application, Contribute Publishing Services. Contribute Publishing Services (CPS) is a server-side
application designed to act as an administrative center; CPS is primarily used to track user access and publishing
activities on the Web site. You??™ll find a brief description for implementing CPS later in this chapter.
The key to Contribute is controlled access. Although the program makes it easy for anyone to modify pages
on the Web, it also restricts what changes can be made. Some of the restrictions are inherent in the type of
pages that make up the site??”Dreamweaver templates, for example, are ideally suited for allowing only
designated sections of a document to be edited. However, many basic limitations, such as which pages can
be edited, are established by the Contribute administrator. Although Contribute sites can be administered
from within Contribute itself, its tight integration with Dreamweaver provides another path: The same
administrative options are available within Dreamweaver.
